This issue is a great starting point for new readers. I haven’t been following this series, but I was quickly able to get up to speed on the story events.

The Tenth Doctor is currently traveling with two female companions, Gabby and Cindy. As this story opens, we see the Doctor sleeping under a pile of boxes with no idea how he got there. A helpful homeless man educates the Doctor on the dangers of the planet and agrees to travel with him to the center of the city.

The action in the story then switches to spotlight Gabby and Cindy, who are trapped in situations that are reinforcing their own memory loss. For Gabby, it’s being stuck in a dead-end job at a restaurant and for Cindy, it’s a romantic relationship with a beautiful caring woman.

The ladies are also drawn to the large glowing building in the center of the town, a spectacular mall.

This is definitely an issue that sets up the story to come but it has a lot of interesting plot points and gorgeous art by Sposito and Florean. I really loved the diversity amongst the companions. I felt connected to them right away and very interested in their narrative.

There is less of the Doctor’s bits in this issue, but it all blends together smoothly.

This is a solid story with lots of little nods to the show and a love letter to David Tenant’s Doctor.
