My name is Sheena Allen and I own mobile application company, Sheena Allen Apps. SAA is currently home to 5 apps - Dubblen, InstaFunds, PicSlit, TwtBooth, and Words on Pics. I'm a 24-year-old female from Terry, MS, a very small town with about 1000 people in population. I wanted out of the small town and wanted more for myself, but without forgetting where I came from. At age 22, I started my app company pretty much by random. Not having any clue how to start or run an app business, I decided to do everything by trial and error. The unfortunate thing about being from Mississippi is that we do not have a lot of tech companies here that you can reach out to and learn from or many investors or mentors in the tech field. So I was left with a choice to either figure it out myself or turn away from it. Almost two years later, I have 5 apps - with two currently being ranked in the Photo & Video category right now, and over 1 million downloads. I am slowly finding my way and trying to make a space not only for myself, but also for other African-Americans in the mobile / tech field, which is currently dominated by white and Asian males. I've had the opportunity to visit Silicon Valley, meet some great people, but I do feel like it is only the beginning.
