Top 10 Black Female Cartoon Characters

I'm a big old 80s nerd and the 90s takes a close second to my decade of choice if I were to ever go back in a time machine.  It got me thinking of what of my favorite cartoons as a kid.  It's easy to compile a list of favorite cartoons...but what about favorite black female cartoon characters?  You don't really see a list like that often right?  Well lets create our own!  The Top 10 Black Female Cartoon Characters of All Time:

10.  Goo from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends

 9. Foxxy Love from Drawn Together

 8. Orange Blossom from Strawberry Shortcake

7. Maxine from Batman Beyond

 6. Keesha Franklin from The Magic School Bus

 5. Gaia from Captain Planet

4. Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats

3. Susie Carmichael from Rugrats

2. Shana Elmsford from Jem

 1. Storm from XMen

  1. not that there's much to choose from, but what about Penny Proud? she was pretty awesome

  2. Let's count the gals not voiced by Cree Summer

I swear she is every other black video game and cartoon character. My brother always jokes that my black character in games and favorite females are almost always her

  3. Gaia isn't black. She is *also* black, but is meant to represent a combination of all races, so she is also asian, native American, white, Australian aboriginal, etc. (One drop rule?)

For such a politically correct show, you still have to wonder why they had two white kids as the main characters (well, I'm white and I thought it was odd, even as a kid--wouldn't it have made more sense to have the fifth kid be Australian aboriginal or native North American?)

Also, Foxxy Love is the rated-R version of Valerie. :P

  5. The bigger question is, how many of these characters did Cree Summer do the voice for? lol Clearly the queen of black girl cartoon voices.

  6. What about Agura Ibaden from Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5? I think she's worth looking into and a benefit to Black girls everywhere. Smart, pretty, a good fighter and she takes charge where it's needed.

  7. Great list. I don't know if you've ever watched this show, but Codename Kids Next Door had a great character. I always loved Numbah 5 ( that's how her name was spelled).

  15. I am proud of you, and I want your book. I'm glad you shared the link here. We need MORE Black children's books.

  16. There are several other nerdy or adventurous girl characters, but most of them are not on television. I don't watch TV anyway, but prefer books or the internet. I'm
building a library for my children (not yet conceived). I was glad to read the entries below of other Black female characters. For anyone interested in buying children's books for half or less than half the retail cost, check out Ollies (store), if there is one in or near your area. Ollie's has a large children's book section.

  21. Don't forget Vixen of Justice League the animated series, also Gina Torres is often the voice of Wonder Woman in animated films.

  22. Foxxy Love needs to be taken off this list. She was every stereotype that white men think about when they see a black women. She was vulgar & ignorant far from being a nerd. Penny Proud should be in her place.

  27. I agree. Compared to the other fabulous characters she sticks out like a sore thumb. I'd rather Mary Melody from Tiny Toon Adventures.

  28. O'Grady!!!! One of the most underrated cartoons ever. Abby was so hilarious. There should be a Part II to this list

  31. Most definitely yes to #1! I didn't watch many of the shows on the list but X-Men was the high-light of my Saturday morning cartoon experience. I didn't watch Strawberry Shortcake as a kid but one of my aunt's bought me an Orange Blossom doll that I kept for many years. Thanks for posting this list!

  32. What about Elisa Maza, from Gargoyles, dag nabit! She was pure bad ass!

  40. They should remake a live action Wonder Woman and cast, hmm...maybe FANTASIA! Yeah, I could see that...my goodness that'd be a sight.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You know she had to be lead singer with that voice. It's Patrice Holloway. This is what she looked like back then. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=17097391&PIpi=16055538
